How Fear Spreads Quickly from Leaders to Employees

How Fear Spreads Quickly from Leaders to EmployeesHow Fear Spreads Quickly from Leaders to EmployeesIn my blog posts, I am always writing to the job seeker or to the person looking for help with their resume. In todays post, I want to address the business owner or leader and how they affect the atmosphere within the office. Are you a strong or fear-driven leader? If you just had a ntzlich twinge about the fear-driven part, then this article is for you.Heres the harsh truth No matter how much you plan, no matter how many rules you put in place, no matter how much risk you avoid, youll never control all the circumstances that influence your business. Never. And if you cant learn to coexist peacefully with that truth, says Dan Prosser, youll never live up to your full potential as a leader.Too many leaders live in fear of the unknown and of uncontrollable events in their business, says Prosser, author ofTHIRTEENERS Why Only 13 Percent of Companies Successfully Execute Their Strategy- and How Yours Can Be One of Them. The consequences can be devastating. Theres no faster way to turn good employees into cynical and nonproductive ones than to stress them out through your efforts to control the possibility of failure.Fear spreads quickly from leaders to employees, Prosser bedrngnises. It stifles individuals and groups, prevents productive risk-taking, and turns engaged innovators into disconnected clock-punchers. Ultimately, the harmful side effects of fear prevents your company from effectively executing its strategy. Here are five behaviors that indicate you are a fear-driven leader1. You value not failing above all else.As Prosser writes in THIRTEENERS, 87 percent of all companies with a strategic plan will fail to execute it. Thats because those companies are pursuing the simplest yet most damaging strategy the strategy to avoid failure. Most people are invested in not failing, and theyve taught all their employees to value that execution model over taking the kind o f risks that have the potential to pay off, says Prosser. Everyones doing it, and its costing your company on a grand scale.2. You cling to old strategies simply because theyre familiar. Many companies that fail often appear to be operating under full sail. Prosser says, Yes, theres lots of action happening in unterstellung organizations, but its usually the wrong kind of action. Its what earned success in years gone by. Leaders at these organizations think that if a strategy has worked before then its got to work again- and that more of the same can only be better. They go out of their way to convince themselves that the old strategy is working- especially when it isnt. The difference between a rut and a grave is only about five and a half feet, Prosser points out. Instead of digging themselves out of the rut theyre in, leaders who cling to old strategies end up just digging themselves in deeper when change occurs in the marketplace. Suddenly, they realize the competition has caught up or customers are starting to disappear.3. You assume you (and you alone) should have all the answers.Fearful leaders often operate like lone wolves. They have to do everything themselves to feel confident it will be done correctly, and they resist considering (much less relying on) the opinions and recommendations of others. This is like taking a test from memory when you have the option to use not just the textbook, but the whole library, Prosser comments. Youll never know how talented your employees are if you think you have to have all the answers. Why not partner with your people to generate radical and revolutionary innovations for the future- a future that does not represent your fears of repeating the past? Let go of how you think it has to be and trust the process, allowing others to contribute ideas and get connected to your vision.4. Your knee-jerk reaction to chaos is to do something- anything.Whether youve just learned of an unexpected drop in quarterly earnings, gotte n bad news from a client, or had a promising deal fall through, youve no doubt been faced with chaos, disorder, or confusion. Did you remain calm and thoroughly assess the situation, or did you panic, rush to judgment, and act without thinking? When youre faced with unexpected chaos or anxiety (especially anxiety that implies youre not equal to the challenge at hand), its easy to think, I need to do something right now, PRosser acknowledges. And so you lay off employees, switch to a new strategy, pull a product off the market, or make some other move that makes you feel better in the short run that you did, well, something. But knee-jerk reactions made out of fear can have a long-lasting negative impact on your organization.5. You find yourself constantly addressing symptoms rather than searching for root causes. When disruptive issues pop up in the workplace, the first thing we want to do is- naturally- snuff them out as fast as we can. Often, thats because we fear not just the conse quences of the disruption, but also the damage that might occur to our own reputations. However, treating only the symptoms rarely works, Prosser says. Most of the time, it just temporarily masks the real problem, which continues to damage workplace performance. As long as youre addressing only the symptoms and allowing core issues to remain, similar problems will just show up somewhere else, and you will go through the same exercise of pulling people in and talking through the problem (actually the symptoms) again and again and again.

How to visualize your success in three easy ways

How to visualize yur success in three easy waysHow to visualize your success in three easy waysSwimming pools were scarce on our Wyoming cattle ranch so I never learned how to swim. That didnt pose a problem until I traveled to the Caribbean and wanted to scuba dive. Little did I know how Id need to visualize success if I wanted to make that diveOne of the requirements of scuba diving certification was to descend ten feet under water, take off my mask and mouthpiece, and put them back on again. What if I lost my mask? Since I couldnt swim, I was afraid I would drown in those few moments underwater without oxygen. The night before the test, I practiced how to visualize my success as I mimicked how I would take off the mask, hold it in my hand, replace it, and hold my breath. I visualized the sequence dozens of times. When it came time for my scuba dive certification, I performed the underwater portion exactly as I had visioned it.I could visualize my success and point to solid science to explain why it worked. Achieving my goal was about more than work and discipline - it was also about physiology. When we learn how to visualize success, it takes a hazy idea and turns it into a clear goal. Its more than a quick fix. Here are 3 easy ways you can learn how to visualize your success1. Be very intentional with the way you talk to yourselfResearchers conclude that the way in which we talk to ourselves about stress and threatening situations influences our neurobiological response to it. When were confronted with an obstacle or roadblock, very often we respond with words rooted in anger, fear, or anxiety. For example, our response may beOh my God, this is awful.I cant do this. Its more than I can handle. When we express ansicht negative emotions, our body begins to release cortisol, a stress hormone. Your negative response does nothing but increase your stress levels.Special Forces soldiers are trained to experience the same fear that they would experience if they were c aptured, interrogated, or tortured. Fear from those kinds of experiences causes cortisol to spike as much as in a patient undergoing heart surgery - about 20 times the normal rate.Soldiers who successfully finish the training were found to have elevated levels of another hormone, neuropeptide Y, which is a natural relaxant.Research estimates that we say 300-1,000 words to ourselves per minute. We learn how to visualize our success when we intentionally choose positive responses to our circumstances so we can override the emotional part of our limbic brain system that regulates anxiety. How To Make It Work For You Self-talk can shift the way you see your stressors. If you notice that youve expressed fear to yourself, Oh my God, this is awful, change your self-talk. Instead, visualize your success and say, I know what to do here. Your positive response will produce more neuropeptide Y.2. Give your brain a detailed image of your goalWe learn how to visualize our success when we look at ourselves in a different way when confronted with a challenge. When we learn how to visualize our success, our brain stores that information as a victory. Our brain releases a neurotransmitter called dopamine. This is the chemical that becomes active when we encounter situations that are linked to rewards from the past.Dopamine enables us to not only see rewards, but to move toward those rewards as well. This is the chemical thats released whenever you think about your favorite meal, or open a new present.A Harvard study has demonstrated that our brain cannot tell the difference between a visualized image of our success and reality. However, it can tell the difference between a visualized image of success and a fantasy.Fantasies can actually lessen our chance for success because our brain looks at fantasies as a threat If people fantasize about their future, they are less prepared and more stressed when things dont workout they way they had hoped. How To Make It Work For You Visuali ze how you will succeed in various situations you might encounter in the future. Imagine how you will react and respond when criticized by a colleague. Predict your wertzuwachs in the morning meeting. Rehearse your response to situations/conversation that might come up. Prepare for the hard questions that will come from your boss.3. Write your goals on paperIf its difficult for you to visualize what success would look like for you, consider ways you could write your goals on paper. Its often easier to communicate goals into words where you have quick access for on-the-go inspiration.Pen and paper visuals can help us envision images of the bigger picture. Those cues help to better store and retrieve information because our brain is more of an image processor than word processor.According to science, two things happen when we write things on paper. First, we store information that pertains to our goal in a place that is easy to access and review at any time.Second, writing on paper im proves the way our brain encodes the information. Encoding is the process by which the things we see and think travel to our brains hippocampus where its analyzed. The brain decides what gets stored in long-term memory and what is discarded. When we write our goals on paper, there is a much greater chance the details of our goals are remembered. How To Make It Work For You Weve become so reliant upon our computers that we upload everything via our keyboard to Evernote. Look at a journal, or even a piece of paper, as a productivity tool. Write down your goal and prioritize next steps. When you prioritize, it forces the brain to interact with information rather than simply react to it. It also forces different parts of the brain (emotional and cerebral) to interact with each other.I want to leave you with one of my favorite quotes from Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor. He talks about the power of visualizationTheres one reason why Im here today. What kept me alive in a situation whe re others had given up hope and died was the dream that someday Id be here telling you how I survived the concentration camps. Ive never been here before. Ive never seen any of you before. Ive never given this speech before. But in my dreams Ive stood before you in this room and said these words a thousand times.Thisarticlefirst appeared onLaraeQuy.com.
